These gifts enable the university to attract, retain, and honor distinguished academic leaders who advance the research mission and enrich the educational experience of undergraduate and graduate students. By 2020 UCR must aggressively grow the number of endowed chairs by no less than 50 percent to support the long-term vision for the campus.
Term chairs enhance a department’s ability to retain or attract the finest faculty by offering them crucial funding that enables them to devote quality time to their groundbreaking research and students. A three-year renewable chair, it is also a means to acknowledge the past, current, and expected contributions a faculty member has made, and will make, to his/her field of research. Because world-class faculty consider the quality of an institution by an endowed fund that it makes available to them, the availability of these types of funds draws the world’s best to UCR.
Fostering Interdisciplinary Centers
Centers and institutes allow UCR to respond quickly to new, emerging initiatives by creating a critical mass and positioning the campus to be at the cutting edge. They also provide invaluable means of enhancing research and creative activities by bridging across departmental boundaries and unifying faculty with common interests, making an imprint on UC Riverside’s future.
